Creepin’ It Real About Period Shame

Let’s talk about the terrifying p-word. Yes, periods. Of course, periods aren’t actually terrifying, but they are stigmatized even though 26% of the global population are active menstruators. So why are periods such a taboo topic?

Maybe it’s because…

  • They pertain to women's bodies

  • They are seen as something to be ashamed of

  • Period blood is seen as “dirty”

Whatever the reason, the lack of open discourse surrounding menstruation, period products, and period education is harmful to all menstruators.

Why is period stigma harmful?

  1. Period shame is inherently misogynistic - Period shame demonizes menstruators for having bodily functions.

  2. Reduces access to quality education - Periods are natural and the first step to combatting the negative narratives that exist around periods is proper education. The “period talk” shouldn’t just include an explanation of the menstrual cycle, it should also include explanations of products, hygiene tips, and reassuring messages

  3. Conditions young girls to be embarrassed about their bodies - Telling young menstruators that their bodies are disgusting can have negative mental health impacts. Open dialogue and communication can provide a safe space for young people to learn about their bodies.

There are numerous ways period shame is harmful. Have you ever experienced period shame? How did it make you feel?

Let’s all focus on building a positive community. No more using terms like the p-word or walking on eggshells about menstrual health. Periods aren’t dirty nor are they scary. The scary thought this Halloween season should be the thought of shaming others for menstruating. We’re just creepin’ it real!
