Pretty
Food for thought: Have you bought into the lie that “pretty” equates to “worthy” ?
I think it’s safe to say Rupi Kaur has taken the world by storm with her thought-provoking poetry and her loving-support for women. She is the daughter of immigrant-parents who found their way from India to Canada when she was 4. With her poetry, Kaur has been able to create a world of intentional dialogue meant to impact the heart of the women, of the warriors. In the poem below, Kaur brings attention to adjectives that are used to describe women, specifically the adjective “pretty.” She apologizes while simultaneously posing a call to action for other women to recognize the power in their words directed toward other women.
This poem specifically addresses the idea that women are more than their external beauty, they are more than pretty. The true beauty of a woman is not always in a tangible form or visible attributes. Your beauty exists underneath, in the depths of your heart built by your journey, the good, the bad and the ugly, which creates the path that led you here.
International Women’s Day might be over but it is still International Women’s History Month and we don’t need a selected day or month to find an excuse to acknowledge the power we hold within ourselves and the power our fellow women contain. We want you to know. . .
