Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day is a time for celebration. Generations of women— mothers, grandmothers, mothers-in-law, and all motherly figures— have sacrificed their time, energy and well-being for us. We hope you had a great Mother’s Day and were able to celebrate the women in your life!

At PPG, we celebrate women every day, and Mother’s Day is no different. We’re celebrating the mothers in our community and shining a light on the strong women who took on this incredible challenge by sharing some good reads with you a day after moms day.

To shine a spotlight on mothers, we picked a few articles that showcase what it means to be a mom and all the pressures that come along with it.

Shayla Caldwell discusses the pressures she faced learning how to be a mother of four. Bogged down by the idea of having to be a “perfect mom”, she overcame societal pressures and personal reservations. In this article, she explores the trials and tribulations of discovering who she is as a mother and a woman while giving tips a little insight for new moms.

This article is featured on Mommifaceted, a platform for black mothers to discuss their experiences. Their blog features podcast episodes that range from the business of motherhood to having a kid crisis to maintaining a life outside of being a mom. Check it out!

This collection of stories was put together by Katy Thompsett to show the many different walks of life of being a single mother. Showing six different stories, Thompsett reveals through mother-daughter duos the importance of a maternal figure, especially in the absence of a father. These moms show us the strength and determination it took to do it on their own, and how rewarding it was in the end.

This story is a love letter from Courtney Eastman to her daughter. Growing up, Eastman suppressed herself and her emotions to fit into the box that she was expected to fit in. Now, she has a seven-year-old daughter who she can teach all of the things that she never got to experience. The best part is she already has these strong, independent qualities. This article explores the relationship between Eastman and her daughter and the generational connection they have.

Sarah Dubbeldam from Darling Magazine defines motherhood in her article The Healing Power of Mothering. A mother isn’t meant to be perfect; a mother is simply a safe place and a person who sees, addresses concern, guides, cherishes and cultivates. It is through showing compassion and care to ourselves that we are able to turn around and give the same to other women.” We heal each other and connect through generations of women.

We hope these articles have opened the eyes of people who are not currently mothers to see all they endure and the hard work they do to shape their children into who they are today. Even though Mother’s Day is over, take some time to thank the mothers—and all women— in your life more often! They deserve it!
